China Steps Up Development of Major Coalfield

China is speeding up development of the Shenfu-Dongsheng Coalfield, the world's eighth largest, in northwestern China.

Total verified reserves in the coalfield located in the juncture of Shaanxi Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are around 223.6 billion tons, according to the Shenhua Group, which is in charge of developing the field.

Work is now being done on a 3,481-square-kilometer area with verified reserves of 35.4 billion tons, and the coalfield now has an annual coal production capacity of 5.65 million tons.

Shenfu-Dongsheng has superior quality steaming coal, low in ash, sulfur, and phosphorus content, and medium to high in calorific value, a Shenhua Group source added.

They plan to develop an annual production capacity of 60 million tons, and related power generating and other facilities will also be built.

Shenhua has been pursuing sustainable development with equal attention to development and environmental protection. It has spent 249 million yuan on environmentally sound construction in the coalfield, and built four separate windbreaks for wind and sand control in an area of 125 square kilometers.

In addition, both sides of the 172-kilometer Baotou-Shenmu Railway and a 78-kilometer highway in the mining area have been planted with vegetation.
