China Inland Middle School to Enroll Xinjiang StudentsSome twelve senior high schools in China's interior will enroll students from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the new semester which starts in September, said Deputy Education Minister Zhang Baoqing on April 6.The move to give stronger support to Xinjiang in the field of human resources development is a concrete step to implementing the central government's strategy to develop the vast western part of China, which includes Xinjiang, Zhang told a national high school work conference on the enrollment of students from Xinjiang. The Ministry of Education has asked high schools in Beijing, Tianjin, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dalian, Qingdao, Ningbo, Suzhou, and Wuxi, all economically developed cities, to open senior high school classes for students from Xinjiang, a border region in underdeveloped northwestern China. These schools will enroll 1,000 junior middle school graduates from Xinjiang every year. Graduates will have the chance to pursue further studies in colleges and universities. High schools has enrolled students from Xinjiang for higher education since mid-1980. From 1996-2000, the central government has spent 300 million yuan in helping Xinjiang develop nine-year compulsory education.
