Chinese Artists to Help Develop Western Region

The China Federation of Literary and Art Circles announced in Beijing on April 6 that it has launched a series of projects to assist the underdeveloped western region of the country to mark the fifth anniversary of President Jiang Zemin's letter to local artists.

These projects have been designed to respond to the central leadership's strategy of developing the economically backward western region on a large scale, according to officials from the federation.

Artists will do their part in the aid-the-west campaign, they said.

So far, six of these projects have been initiated, including the "Project Rosy Dawn" which will help poor children aged 7 to 15, and an afforestation program to plant trees in poor areas.

On Friday, a group of local artists from Beijing will kick off a performance tour in Xi'an, the capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province.
