Chirac, Mori Hold Telephone Conversation

French President Jacques Chirac had a telephone conversation on Thursday with Yoshiro Mori, Japanese new prime minister, one day after his official swearing-in.

French presidential spokeswoman Catherine Colonna said that the two leaders promised to continue the "excellent relations of partnership and cooperation" between France and Japan.

Chirac invited Mori to visit France whenever he wishes and expressed hope for the success of the new prime minister in his "high mission."

The French president also expressed his sympathy to the family of former Prime Minister Keizo Obushi, who has been in coma for several days.

Chirac and Mori mentioned the forthcoming summit of the Group of Eight most industrialized nations and the European Union-Japanese summit to be held in the latter half of this year.
