Guangxi Receives Huge Fund for Road Construction

Road links in southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will be substantially upgraded with a subsidy of two billion yuan from the Central Government over the next four years.

The region, densely populated by ethnic-minority people, has lagged behind China's coastal areas. Mountainous conditions are blamed for the region's tardy economic development.

The fund will be spent building roads running through remote mountain areas in Hechi Prefecture, to benefit 3.73 million people. Road construction has long been one of the most important poverty-relief measures in China. The project in Guangxi will help the region export its rich natural resources.

Guangxi is also expecting a package loan worth three billion yuan (about US$ 361 million) from the World Bank for a 236- km expressway linking this regional capital with Hechi Prefecture.
