Desertification Due To Increased Dust Storms in North China

Weather experts believe the major reason for more dust storms in north China this spring is the enlarging desert area in the northwest of the country.

They say strong winds are not the chief cause of four dust storms over the past month in Beijing and other parts in north China as some people believe.

Although Beijing and Tianjin are making enormous efforts to plant trees and vegetation, worsening desertification in the north is posing the threat of more dust storms reaching the Chinese capital.

A forestry ministry official says the country will speed up planting programmes on the Inner Mongolia plateau and build three big forestry farms in Hebei Province to form a "green shelter" for Beijing and Tianjin.
