Drought Hits Central China Province

Wheat output will probably decline by a wide margin this year in Henan Province, a major grain producer in central China, if the current drought continues. Drought is hitting 1.37 million hectares of wheat at present, which is a key period to the growth of the crop.

Local sources said that 3,800 hectares of wheat in the province already have seriously withered.

From January to March, Henan reported only 7.82 mm of rainfall, 87 percent less than normal. Most parts in the province have had no rainfall for nearly 60 days now.

Nearly one million people in the area, and livestock are also having difficulty getting water, as more than 200 small and medium- sized reservoirs have run dry.

Authorities note that the drought situation is expected to remain serious for the near future.
