China to Regulate Online Education

China has decided to tighten the management of the country's surging educational websites. Wei Yu, deputy minister of education, said at a teleconference on April 5 that there are some "substandard operations" on the Internet, and "they must be eliminated."

China started providing online educational services in 1998 on a trial basis in four universities. But now various institutes and individuals have launched their own websites, according to Wei. Wei said that online educational information is "a part of the socialist education system", and only the Ministry of Education has the right to manage the service.

Any department or unit that wishes to open an educational website must apply for approval to the ministry or local education authority, Wei said.

Meanwhile, the ministry will conduct examination and evaluation of the quality of educational services provided by Internet service providers in colleges, she added.
