The 4th China International E- Commerce Summit opened on April 5 in Beijing.

The four-day meeting, sponsored by the Ministry of Information Industry, the State Economic and Trade Commission, and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, has attracted more than 300 information technology multinational corporations and 100 industry leaders from home and abroad.

Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo said in a written speech at the opening ceremony that the country has set the development of e-commerce as an important element of its information economy, and that the country faces both challenges and opportunities as it still lags behind in this sector.

Wu Jichuan, minister of the Information Industry, said that e- commerce, with advantages of low cost and a large potential market, represents the future of commerce.

He noted that China still needs to improve its infrastructure and establish regulations and laws in this respect to ensure the healthy development of the sector.

Exhibitions, seminars, and CEO forums will be held during the meeting, during which experts and entrepreneurs will discuss the global application and development of e-commerce, and the application of related trends in finance, trade, and transportation.
