China Digital Library Project Launched

Participants at a conference on China's Digital Library Project, which was held on April 5, announced that the project has been officially launched after years of preparations.

Government officials and experts from 21 units involved in the project attended the meeting, at which some prominent experts and scholars were appointed members of an advisory committee to guide the project.

Digital libraries are electronic data bases for storing and utilizing knowledge and information, emerging along with the development of Internet technology.

Currently, English-language information dominates the Internet, while Chinese-language information makes up less than one percent of the world's total.

The creation of the China Digital Library is aimed at increasing the use of Chinese-language information and promoting the Chinese culture, the experts noted.

In recent years, local experts have conducted a series of research projects related to the digital library, as the country is now capable of building this important new storehouse of culture and information.
