China Launches Digital Information Project for Land Resources

China has launched a digital information project for land resources to push forward the assessment and monitoring of land.

The project includes construction of a basic data bank for China's land, mineral, and other resources, a land resources management information system, and social service systems.

Information technology for investigating and assessing land resources will be developed, and a nationwide information network will be created.

An official from the Ministry of Land Resources said this project is expected to be completed by 2002, and after the completion, authoritative land resources information will be available on the network.

In addition, China is pushing forward the creation of Digital Earth, a process through which any geographical location on earth can be digitized and made available on the Internet for either economic or military use.

Digital Earth also can provide rich information for mineral, and oil and natural gas exploration, and conserving forests, grasslands, and ocean resources.
