Vice Premier Lectures on Education

Vice-Premier Li Lanqing gave a lecture Tuesday in Beijing on education to students of the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Li's lecture, on the topic "Further Strengthening and Improving Educational Work and Promoting the Healthy Growth of Youth to Face Opportunities and Challenges in the 21st Century" was composed of five admonitions-- Seriously study President Jiang Zemin's important speech on the issue of education so as to be better aware of the importance of the issue and to achieve consensus on the issue;

-- Make substantial efforts to strengthen and improve educational work;

-- Attach importance to and improve family-based education;

-- Mobilize the whole society to take care of the growth of young people;

-- Intensify direction of education by CPC committees and governments at different levels.

In his speech, the vice premier, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, briefed the audience on restructuring the systems for the management of universities and for the management of science and technology.
