Guilin Improves Toilet FacilitiesGuilin, the most famous tourist city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, will launch an unprecedented campaign to build many more modern toilet facilities and improve conditions in existing restrooms throughout the city.Mayor Li Jinzao announced Monday at a press conference that under this project, Guilin will build and upgrade 500 public washrooms in accordance with international standards in urban districts, and at tourist and scenic sites. The washrooms will be open to visitors free of charge this October. Meanwhile, existing toilets in all of the city's administrative organizations, enterprises, and governmental institutions must also be rebuilt to meet the set requirements before October, and should be open to local residents and visitors free of charge, said the mayor. Guilin, noted for its natural scenery and strangely shaped stone formations, hosts some 10 million tourists every year. The city has been investing heavily in large-scale urban construction since last year in a bid to become a modern international tourist destination. Construction of new washrooms, the most important element of the urban infrastructure, has been placed atop the local government's agenda. According to the mayor, public washrooms will be built or rebuilt with unified designs provided by the city government. A group of companies will be selected to manage the new facilities by public bidding. |
