China to Regulate Advertising Industry

China has stepped up its efforts to combat irregularities in the advertising industry, to promote fair competition in this booming sector. Regulations to monitor the new marketing activities, especially advertisement on the Internet are being drafted by the State Administration of Industry and Commerce.

The country's advertising industry has registered a double-digital growth in its annual turnover for two consecutive years, but certain illegal practices like fake advertising have disturbed the sound accord.

Cases like advertising malpractice have increased 36 percent last year over the previous year, with fake advertising taking up 10 percent.

The State Administration of Industry and Commerce attributes the occurrences of malpractice in advertising to the emergence of new media channels and marketing patterns like the Internet, as there are yet no specific laws to regulate them.
