In Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, clusters of banyan tree roots, extending over two kilometers long on an ancient city wall, attracts more and more tourists.
The ancient city wall, located at the Qiaotou Village, Chaoyang Town, Longwen District, was built in Ming Dynasty, with which the local people used to parry off the Japanese pirates. The wall lies by the northern tributary of Jiulong River where the soil is damp and the climate warm. During hundreds of years, the seeds of banyan trees went with the wind into cracks of the wall, and grew unyieldingly from it into huge flourishing banyan trees. The roots of hundreds of old banyan trees on the wall intertwine to form a remarkable "roots wall" that stretches as far as ones eyes can see.
The roots of banyan trees, some thick and others thin and some looking like curling dragons yet others like phoenixes of all descriptions, are very vivid and great in styles. No matter you look at them from whatever angle, it presents a painting so tasteful that nobody will fail to admire the wonders wrought by nature.
