CMC Vice-Chairman Meets Italian Air Chief Staff

A senior Chinese military officer Monday reaffirmed that the Taiwan issue can not be dragged on indefinitely, and if a grave turn of events occurs leading to the separation of Taiwan from China in any form, or if Taiwan is invaded and occupied by a foreign country, or if the Taiwan authorities refuse, sine die, the peaceful settlement of cross-Straits reunification through negotiations, the Chinese government will be forced to adopt all drastic measures possible to smash any splittist attempt.

Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission (CMC), made these remarks here when meeting Andrea Fornasiero, chief of staff of the Italian Air Force.

He said that recently a new leader has emerged through a local election in the Taiwan region. No matter who has taken this position, he can not change the historical fact that Taiwan is a part of Chinese territory, and can not lead Taiwan to independence ".

Zhang added that Chinese government can not allow "independence of Taiwan" in any form, and the "one China" principle is unshakeable.

He noted that "peaceful reunification, and one China, two systems" is the Chinese government's basic guideline to solve the Taiwan issue, but it will not undertake to renounce the use of force.

Zhang also said that the development of military relations between China and Italy is satisfactory, and that he expects further progress in this regard.

He said that Fornasiero's visit demonstrates the intention of the Italian armed forces, especially the Italian air force, to further their friendly relations with their Chinese counterparts. He expressed his belief that the visit will further promote the cooperative relations between the armed forces of the two countries.

Fornasiero also said that he hoped this visit would promote friendly cooperation between the air forces of the two countries. He conveyed greetings from Massimo d'Alema, Italian prime minister, and Sergio Mattarella, Italian defense minister, to Zhang, and he voiced his hope that China's cause of peaceful reunification would achieve success.

Liu Shunyao, commander of the air force of the People's Liberation Army, was among those attending the meeting. The Italian guests arrived here April 1 at the invitation of Liu.
