FM Reception Marks 50th Anniversary of Sino-Indian Ties

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan expressed the hope in Beijing Monday that both China and India will work together for a brighter future for their friendship, and make greater contributions to safeguarding world peace and promoting common development and the progress of mankind. Tang said this at a reception held by the Foreign Ministry to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Sino-Indian relations were forged by the older generation of leaders in both countries, and have progressed under the care of the new generation of leadership, Tang said, quoting several remarks made by late Chinese leaders Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping regarding Sino-Indian relations.

He stressed that during Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to India in 1996, the leaders of both states decided to establish a constructive cooperative partnership oriented toward the 21st century, which designated the direction and set a framework for the development of bilateral relations.

Indian Ambassador to China Vijay K. Nambiar said that both India and China are great civilizations. "We have a history of close interaction and exchanges stretching over more than a thousand years in almost every field, covering high culture, philosophy and religion as well as the practical concerns of trade, technology and material existence," he said.

Looking forward to the coming 50 years, he said that he is " confident that there is political will on both sides to usher in this new stage of India-China relations based on better understanding, trust, equality and mutuality in our relations."
