HK Exhibition, Seminar Mark Basic Law Anniversary

An exhibition and seminar marking the 10th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) opened Monday in Hong Kong.

Addressing the opening speech, Jiang Enzhu, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, highly praised people from all walks of life for their earnest effort in carrying out the Basic Law over the past years.

Facts show that the Basic Law complies entirely with the situation of Hong Kong and the interests of all the Chinese people including the Hong Kong compatriots, and it is full of vitality, said Jiang.

He pointed out that the Basic Law, which is cornerstone of the political and legal systems of the Hong Kong SAR, offers legal basis for the SAR administration and helps consolidate and further develop the legal system of the region.

As the first law dedicated to the "one country, two systems," the Basic Law of the Hong Kong SAR has helped the smooth return of Macao and will set an example for the ultimate reunification of the motherland, he noted.

Jiang said the young people are future backbone of the community and it is important to acquainted them with the Basic Law.

The active promotion of the Basic Law by the youth organizations in Hong Kong has helped increase exchanges and cooperation in the legal field between Hong Kong and the mainland and has contributed much to the popularization of the Basic Law among the young people, he said.

The exhibition and seminar was sponsored by the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po newspaper and some youth organizations. Officials and scholars from Hong Kong, Macao and the mainland delivered speeches at the seminar.
