White Dolphins Return to Shenzhen HarbourWhite dolphins have returned to Shenzhen Harbour after an absence of more than a decade, according to report of China Daily.Improvements to the marine environment are believed to have prompted their reappearance. In the past few weeks, officials with the Nanshan Supervision Station of the Shenzhen Maritime Safety Administration (SMSA), have seen five to six white dolphins chasing each other playfully almost every day in Ciwan Bay in the west of the harbour. Shenzhen Harbour became the country's second largest container port in 1998. The development was too fast even for local people themselves, and they could spare no time to handle the large amounts of foul water and garbage brought into the harbour by the ships coming and going. Luckily, the SMSA aimed higher, and realized the importance of a good marine environment. Jiang Qunying, one leading SMSA official, said the administration felt it necessary to upgrade the local marine environment to build Shenzhen into a world-class harbour. "The marine environment of our harbour, as well as its adjacent areas, is in its best state since the end of the 1980s. And we are trying to maintain this position for as long as possible," Jiang said.
