The well-known Brigham Young University (BYU) Ballroom Dance Company of the United States will be performing in China during a May tour. Beijing dance fans will have the opportunity to watch the American dancers at the beginning of the tour on May 11 and 12, organizers from the Century Performance Corporation, one of China' s influential theatrical agencies, announced Monday.

The dance troupe will also be seen in Guangzhou in Guangdong Province, Nanjing in Jiangsu Province, Shanghai, and Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, the organizers said.

The BYU Ballroom Dance Company, known worldwide for its exciting and energetic two-hour program, has won first prize at the United States National Formation Dance Championships for 18 consecutive years.

The dancers aroused a heated response from Chinese audiences, especially among young people, when it made its China debut 16 years ago.

According to critics, the dancers combine traditional formation dances and standard ballroom steps with fresh choreography, breathtaking lifts and spins, stunning costumes, and energetic rhythms and melodies, in a show that delights and entertains audiences of all kinds.

Formed in 1971, the Ballroom Dance Company has performed throughout the United States and in 28 foreign countries, featuring dances ranging from the Viennese Waltz to West Coast swing.

Jiang Shan, senior project manager at Century Performance Corporation, said the dance company's China performance would include swing, Viennese waltzes, cha-cha, Argentine tango, comedy tango, and rumba and quickstep.
