Indian Leaders Send Congratulatory Telegrams to Mark Ties With China

Indian President Kocheril Raman Narayanan and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee have recently

sent congratulatory telegrams to their Chinese counterparts Jiang Zemin and Zhu Rongji respectively to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the bilateral relations.

"India and China are close neighbors. We greatly value the spiritual and intellectual interaction between our two great peoples and civilizations over the last two millennia, which has enriched us both," said Narayanan in his message to President Jiang on April 1.

"We have jointly bequeathed Panchsheel -- the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence -- to the world, which at the dawn of the new millennium has acquired new relevance in the conduct of inter-State relations," the president added.

In his telegram to Chinese Premier Zhu on March 31, Vajpayee said that "the twin imperatives of peace and prosperity impel us to build on our historical affinity and expand our contacts and co-operation."

With the joint efforts of the two sides, the two countries could build a stable relationship of constructive cooperation into the 21st century and contribute to peace and stability in Asia and the whole world, Vajpayee added.

On April 1, Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh also sent a congratulatory telegram to his Chinese counterpart Tang Jiaxuan.
