Green Lottery Proposed For Environmental Protection

A government advisor in east China's Zhejiang Province has raised a proposal of running a "green lottery" to support the national afforestation campaign for China.

Shao Shusheng, a member of the Jiande Municipal Committee of Zhejiang Province of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said the task of preventing soil erosion and desertification is formidable, and it is very difficult for the government to allocate sufficient funds for this purpose.

He also suggested the lottery should strongly emphasize the theme of environmental protection.

China's vegetation and afforestation coverage is only 13 percent and the per capital coverage is only 11.3 percent of the world average. The country's desertification is so serious that it has hindered the development of the national economy.

Realizing the seriousness of the problem, China's State Council last year called on all localities to reclaim barren hills, plant trees, and create green belts in coastal areas.

China began issuing lotteries in 1987 and has sold some 35 billion yuan (4.2 billion U.S. dollars) worth of tickets in the past 12 years.

China now has sports, welfare, education, and computer lotteries, all very popular among Chinese citizens.
