Obuchi in Coma, Resignation Inevitable: Acting Prime Minister

Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi is in a coma and breathing with the help of an artificial respirator, Chief Cabinet Secretary and Acting Prime Minister Mikio Aoki said Monday.

The top Japanese government spokesman said Obuchi's medical condition is "unpredictable," admitting that it is unavoidable for the prime minister to resign in the near future due to the seriousness of his condition.

Obuchi, who suffered a stroke, was taken to a hospital in Tokyo at around 1 a.m. local time Sunday (1600 GMT Saturday). His condition worsened at around 7:30 p.m. local time (1030 GMT) Sunday and he fell into a coma.

Doctors at Tokyo's Juntendo University Hospital moved Obuchi to the intensive care unit there shortly after 8 p.m. (1100 GMT) and put Obuchi on the respirator at 9:50 p.m. (1250 GMT) Sunday, Aoki said.

Asked if he can order the resignation of the entire cabinet in the capacity of acting prime minister, Aoki, who assumed the post Monday morning, said, "Yes."

"I cannot say at this moment when (Obuchi's resignation) will take place. I have to closely monitor the course of his condition before making a decision," Aoki said.
