Japanese Prime Minister Obuchi in Coma

Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi is unconscious and breathing with the help of an artificial respirator at hospital after suffering a stroke early Sunday, acting Prime Minister Mikio Aoki said Monday.

Obuchi's condition worsened at around 7:30 p.m. local time (1030 GMT) Sunday and he fell into a coma, Aoki told reporters.

"At present, he is in a coma ... and has been on artificial respiration since 9:50 p.m. (1250 GMT) on Sunday. ... We can't rule out anything," he said.

Aoki was appointed acting prime minister when he visited Obuchi in hospital on Sunday evening.

Obuchi, 62, was hospitalized at Tokyo's Juntendo University Hospital early Sunday for exhaustion and transferred to the intensive care unit at about 8 p.m. Sunday (1100 GMT).
