In China, there are about 3 out of 10 people living in towns and cities nowadays, that means apportion of the rural population has dropped to less than 70 percent in China, down from over 80 percent two decades ago.
This is illustrated by spot check surveys to 150 thousand families in 226 cities and counties through out China by China's Statistics Bureau last year.
According to the surveys, population apportion in China's towns and cities accounted for only 17.9 percent before 1978, but the number has risen to 30.4 percent by 1998, a 12.5 percent increase in twenty years. Statistics show that a 5 percent of China's population, or 60 million lived outside of hometown for more than 6 months and most of them swarmed to towns and cities.
The surveys also predict that after another 10 years, population apportion in China's towns and cities will rise to over 40 percent
