On-line College Attracts Students

China's first Internet-based university opened to the public over the weekend. This Web College, sponsored by the Continuous Education Institute of Qinghua University and the Information Center of Beijing Science and Technology Committee, is designed to "train professionals in specialized skills".

Offering courses on computer science and product quality appraisals, the web college will mainly recruit students in Beijing, according to China Daily.

Sun Xuewei, the institute's representative, said students are able to choose their own courses and get credit for them. Students' questions will be answered by on-line forums and discussions, and examinations will be held annually at Qinghua University.

By applying at the Information Center of Beijing Science and Technology Committee, students are required to pay 15 yuan (1.8 U. S. dollars) for every 50 minutes of time logged on to the course websites.

However, the web college only offers courses on specialized skills and does not issue academic degrees, Sun said. Statistics from the information center indicate that about 500 people have so far expressed interest in taking courses at the web college
