Shanghai Resists Eating Wild Animals

On April 2, eight academicians with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering in Shanghai, including Ye Shuhua and Yang Xiongli, as well as the Shanghai Wild Animals Protection Club of Primary and High School Students raised a proposal of "Refraining From Eating Wild Animals, Living a Life of Civility" to 13 million Shanghai citizens and 2.2 million Shanghai teenagers respectively.

It is reported that this popular science publicity activity is co-sponsored by the Shanghai Wild Animal Protection Association, the International Wildlife Protection Society and Shanghai Sci-tech and Education Center of Youngsters. The theme of this activity is "Protect the Ecological Environment, Safeguard Human Health, Live a Life of Civility and Do Not Eat Wild Animals"

According to Dr Zhang Endi, Chinese project director with the International Wildlife Protection Society, although the international community has tried its best to protect wild animals, the acts of killing, purchasing and selling wild animals continue unabated despite repeated prohibitions. Presently, the international trade in wild animals has become the third major illegal trade following the trade in drugs and weapons.

Well-known Biologist Yang Xiongli said that more than 700 historically recorded animals have died out in the last 1,600 years in human history. China has as many as 156 out of the 640 internationally acknowledged species of wild animals on the brink of extinction. China is currently confronted with a very grim situation in regard to wild animal protection.

On April 2, the Shanghai Wild Animal Protection Association and the International Wildlife Protection Society signed an agreement with over 20 primary and middle schools to build special schools of wild animal protection and they will encourage and assist these schools to carry out various styles of wild animal protection activities.

It is reported that the publicity activity will last for eight months. Over 10 activities like popular science knowledge contest, soliciting articles for science forum and exhibition on popular science education will be held during this period of time.
