Mubarak to Mediate between Syria, IsraelThe chance to achieve peace between Syria and Israel is still in exsitence as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will try to bridge the gap between the two countries, said Syrian diplomatic sources on Sunday.Mubarak will visit Syria and hold a summit meeting with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad soon after he meets Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, the sources said. Mubarak, who paid a visit to the United States recently and met U.S. President Bill Clinton on the Middle East peace process especially on the Syrian-Israeli track, had a phone call with Assad Sunday evening. Murabak's mediation between Syria and Israel is backed by the United States, the sources added. Israel was ready to return the Golan Heights to Syria but tried to change the border lines of June 4, 1967, particularly on the northwest bank of Tibrias Lake in order to control the water sources in the Golan Heights, they noted. The area in question used to be under Syrian control till June 4, 1967. During the Geneva summit, Clinton conveyed to Assad Israel's proposals to hand over Al-Hemma district to Syria in lieu of keeping all the shores of Tibrias under Israeli control. However, Assad turned down the offer. Clinton asked Assad to offer new suggestions to bread the deadlock over the following weeks, thereby letting the door ajar for hopes to revive the Syrian-Israeli peace talks in cooperation with Arab and European mediators, the sources pointed out.
