Iraq Appreciates UAE Stance Against EmbargoIraq appreciates the call of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for lifting the sanctions imposed on Iraq since 1990, said Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan while meeting a trade and industrial delegation from the UAE on Sunday. The UAE's stance is important for rebuilding the Arab unity, said the vice president. Ramadan stressed that the U.S., who has been leading military aggressions against Iraq, is in desperate attempts to prolong the decade-long sanctions aimed at causing damage not only to Iraq but also to the whole Arab world. During the meeting, Ramadan reaffirmed that Iraq gives priority to Arab countries in developing trade relations, because it will help the causes of Iraq as well as the Arab world, and strengthen their struggle against Arab nations' enemies. According to statistics released by the Iraqi government, Iraq signed more than half the contracts with Arab countries within the framework of the U.N. oil-for-food program. Under the U.N. humanitarian deal, Iraq is allowed to sell a certain amount of oil to import humanitarian supplies such as food and medicine for its 22 million people. Iraq has been under crippling U.N. sanctions ever since its 1990 invasion of Kuwait, and the end of the sanctions is yet to be seen. The U.S. has vehemently opposed the lifting of the sanctions. UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan has called for lifting the trade embargo on Iraq, emphasizing the necessity of ending the sufferings of the Iraqi people and restoring normal relations among Arab nations.
