Uganda Mourns Murdered Cultists in KanunguThousands of Ugandans gathered in Kanungu in southwestern part of the country Sunday afternoon to mourn the over 920 victims of the cult Movement for the Restoration of Ten Commandments of God.The ceremony, presided over by Vice President Specioza Kazibwe, was also attended by diplomats and ordinary foreigners. In the key-note speech, Kazibwe urged religious leaders to offer proper guidance to their followers. She described the Kanungu incident, in which over 530 people were burnt to death in a church fire on March 17, as a mass murder and the cult leaders as "ruthless religious maniacs." The cult was not an ordinary religious sect and its leaders were clever but mentally sick extremists, she added. Kazibwe said that the government is compiling the list of victims and called on the relatives of victims to report to the police. On the cause of the incident, Kazibwe said that those who failed to act properly to avoid the tragedy would also be punished for their negligence. "Uganda respects the freedom of worship, but the government is not going to allow the freedom of worship stipulated in the Constitution to be exploited and abused," the vice-president said. The nation observed this day as a special day of mourning for the victims most of whom were innocent and murdered. Before the ceremony, she visited the scene of the incident and laid a wreath on the big tomb where hundreds of the cult victims were buried.
