Iranian President Underlines Expansion of Tehran-Sanaa Ties

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami on Sunday called for further expansion and development of bilateral relations between Iran and Yemen to serve the stability, progress and security of the region.

In a meeting with visiting Yemeni Information Minister Abdul Rahman Muhammad al-Akwa, Khatami said that Iran and Yemen have deeply-rooted historical ties and common interests. He said, expressing hope that the exchange of visits between the high ranking officials of the two countries would lead to further expansion of bilateral relations.

Describing Yemen's domestic and foreign policy as "prudent," Khatami praised Yemen for attaining unity both within and outside the country, and supporting the Lebanese people and their movement against the Israeli occupation.

He termed the mutual agreements on information between the two sides as "positive" and said that there is a very firm determination in Iran to further consolidate and expand the relations with Yemen.

The Yemeni minister Lauded Khatami's viewpoints on issues of dialog among civilizations.

Every vigilant and informed Muslim should follow the same plan and way of thinking, he said, also underlining expansion of cooperation in information between the two countries. The minister also brought a written message from Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to Khatami.

Khatami said that the upcoming visit by Saleh to Iran would be a turning point in the relations between the two countries. But it is not clear when Saleh will visit Iran.
