China's Population not to Exceed 1.3 Billion This CenturyBy the end of this year, China's population will not exceed 1.3 billion, according to estimates by China Academy of Social Science's (CASS) Population Research Institute.CASS's Population Research Institute will publish a "green paper" on annual population research. This year's focus is population issues in rural areas. The research aims at proposing feasible strategies to tackle problems in population control for the central government. Head of Population Research Institute, CASS Cai Fang said: " The policy used to be two kids for each family in China, now the transition period is over and most families just have one child. It is just a rumour that China's population will reach 1.4 billion." This year's paper shows that during the past two decades, China has been running an effective population control policy, which has prevented the births of at least three hundred million people. The national census shows that by the end of this September, China's population will reach one billion two hundred and sixty million. However, seventy percent of the population comes from the rural areas. Hence, this year's work focused on population issues in the countryside. The demographic indices indicate that the increasing population in rural areas have little education compared with people in urban areas. The green paper says that developing the economy and increasing investment in education are key steps.
