Network Unification Hot Topic

The convergence of three major networks was again the hot topic during the first Sino-US Conference on Cable TV Management, which kicked off yesterday in Beijing, according to report of China Daily.

"In this fast converging and reconstructing age, more competitors in the telecommunications and cable broadcasting industries will only make the 'cake' bigger, and everybody should have the right to have a slice," said Robert Pepper, chief of the plans and policy office of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Three major networks refer to cable broadcasting, telecom and Internet. They are presently running separately by different sectors. Whether cable broadcasting and telecom companies are free to enter each other's business sovereignty has become a sensitive topic.

Given the fact that business overlap happens all the time, Chen Xiaoning, a senior official with State Administration of Radio Film and Television, said the business convergence of cable broadcasting and telecom is unavoidable.

As the biggest cable broadcasting market and the first cable TV programme provider, China and the United States have much experiences to share with and learn from each other.

Senior officials from the FCC, ESPN, Time Warner Cable, MTV and Cox Communications took part in the conference, as did major Chinese cable TV operators.

The two-day conference was hosted by MediaView in conjunction with the administration's Information Network Centre.
