Chinese Leaders Join People on Tree-planting Day

Chinese President Jiang Zemin and other state leaders joined millions of Chinese people in planting trees in Beijing and other parts of the country Saturday.

Among the Communist Party and state leaders who took part in tree planting were Li Peng, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing.

About 2 million Beijing residents volunteered to plant trees on Saturday.

Jiang Zemin, Zhu Rongji, Li Ruihuan, Hu Jintao, Wei Jianxing and Li Lanqing went to the China Centenary Altar to plant trees together with school children from a Beijing primary school at 10 o'clock in the morning.

This is the 11th year in a row that Chinese President Jiang Zemin has taken part in Tree Planting Day.

Jiang Zemin said that tree-planting activities should be continued to raise the people's awareness of environmental protection. He also stressed that environmental protection is a top priority in developing western parts of China. He urged the people across the nation to strengthen efforts to improve the environment by planting trees and grass.

Premier Zhu Rongji urged Beijing city to continue efforts in "greenifying" the city.

Li Ruihuan said he wants to see more trees and vegetation in the capital to reduce air pollution.

Hu Jintao encouraged school children to become environmentally aware and protect the planet.

Wei Jianxing inquired of Beijing officials about the city's public security and other matters as he planted trees.

Li Peng, who is on an inspection tour in Zhejiang province in east China, also took part in planting trees in the provincial capital of Hangzhou.
