Millions of Beijingers Plant Trees

More than two million Beijingers today planted trees to mark the capital's 16th Tree Planting Day. Tree planters included Party and state leaders, soldiers, workers, and students. Collectively, they planted 1.18 million trees across the city.

The first Saturday in April has become Tree Planting Day. Since 1985, millions of local residents have taken part in planting trees and significantly increased people's awareness of the importance of protecting the environment. By the end of 1999, the forest coverage rate of the capital rose to 42 percent.

The city plans to plant 1.7 million trees and one million square meters of lawn this year.
