Chronology of Major Events in Sino-Indian Relations since 1950China and India mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries Saturday . The following is a chronology of major events in Sino-Indian relations since 1950:April 1, 1950 -- China and India established diplomatic relations. October 1954 -- Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited China.November 28 to December 10, 1956: Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai visited India. October 1962 -- An armed border conflict erupted between the two countries. 1976 -- Sino-Indian relations gradually improved after the two countries resumed sending ambassadors to each other. June 1981-- Chinese Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister Huang Hua visited India. The two sides decided to hold talks at officials' level to seek a settlement of the boundary issue and began the talks in December of the same year. December 19- 23, 1988 -- Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi paid an official visit to China . December 11-16, 1991 -- Chinese Premier Li Peng visited India. The two sides reiterated that the two countries should continuously develop good-neighborly relations of friendship and cooperation of mutual benefit, and settle the Sino-Indian boundary issue through negotiations on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence initiated by the two countries. May 18-23, 1992 -- Indian President Ramaswami Venkataraman paid a state visit to China as guest of Chinese President Yang Shangkun. Venkataraman's visit to China was the first by an Indian head of state. September 6-9, 1993 -- Indian Prime Minister Narasimha Rao paid a four-day official goodwill visit to China and signed an agreement allowing for a reduction in military confrontation along the disputed border. October 21-28, 1994 -- Vice-President Kocheril Raman Narayanan of India paid an official good-will visit to China at the invitation of Chinese Vice-President Rong Yiren. November 15-19, 1995 -- Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Qiao Shi paid an official visit to India. October 16-18, 1996 -- The ninth round of border talks of the Sino-Indian Joint Working Group on Border Issues and the consultations at the vice foreign minister level were held in Beijing. Positive progress was made in clarifying the line of actual control and on increasing confidence-building measures. During the talks, the two sides reviewed the development of the bilateral ties since the eighth round of negotiations in 1995, and exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern. November 28-December 1, 1996 -- Chinese President Jiang Zemin paid a four-day state visit to India.November 29, 1996 -- China and India signed four agreements in New Delhi. The agreements include one on confidence- building measures in the military field along the line of actual control in the China-India border areas, one on maritime transportation, one on maintaining the Indian consulate-general in Hong Kong after July 1, 1997, and one on jointly combating illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances and other crimes. December 14-22, 1997 -- Wei Jianxing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau and member of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) paid a goodwill visit to India at the invitation of Indian Vice President Krishna Kant. The visit is mainly aimed at promoting the further development of friendly relations between the two countries and the two peoples. April 26-30, 1998 -- Fu Quanyou, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) paid a five-day goodwill visit to India. During his visit, Fu exchanged views with Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes and chiefs of the three services of the Indian Armed Forces on closer ties between the two countries and armed forces. April 7, 1999 -- Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), met a visiting delegation from the All Indian National Congress (AINC), led by Natwar Singh, a member of the AINC National Committee, in Beijing.During the meeting, Hu said that Sino-Indian relations should be handled from the historical perspective and a long-term viewpoint under the current complex and changing international situation at the turn of the century. The Sino-Indian relations have progressed along the normal development track over the past decade thanks to the joint efforts of the leaders of the two countries. June 14,1999-- Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan held talks with visiting Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh in Beijing. Singh reiterated that the Indian government does not view China as a threat. He said that the Indian government's basic policy is to develop good-neighborly relations of friendship with China. June 25, 1999 -- Li Peng, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, met with visiting Harkishan Singh Surjeet, general secretary of the Communist Party of India ( Marxist) in Beijing. During the meeting, Li Peng pointed out that the development of the close-neighbor relations between China and India not only accords with the fundamental interests of both countries and the common aspirations of the two peoples, but also is a consistent position of the CPC and the Chinese government. February 22, 2000 -- China and India signed a bilateral agreement on China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Beijing. February 24, 2000 -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China and India signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on information technology and services cooperation in Hong Kong.
