China Conducts TB Epidemiological Survey

China started a national tuberculosis (TB) epidemiological survey Saturday in Shijiazhuang which will provide information for drafting a TB control plan for the coming decade.

This will be the fourth TB survey in China.

TB claims 250,000 lives each year in China, and is a serious public health problem hindering the country's social and economic development, according to a senior Chinese health official.

A total of six million TB patients make China the second largest TB country in the world, after India, the official said.

Specialists have warned that without effective measures about 200 million to 300 million Chinese might be infected by TB bacillus in the next decade, and one-tenth of them could become TB patients.

With World Bank loans totaling 58 million US dollars, China launched the world's largest TB control project in 13 provinces in 1992. It initiated another TB control project in 15 provinces in 1994.

To date, more than 1.2 million contagious TB patients have been treated, and about 90 percent of them cured. The TB survey will take two months.
