Chongqing Launches Clean Energy Resource Project

Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has launched a clean energy resources project to re- address the problem of air pollution. According to local officials, the municipal government has collected 800 million yuan (96 milllion U.S. dollars) from society for the project.

With the implementation of this project, 2,563 coal-burning boilers in the city's catering and governmental organization sectors will be replaced by natural gas boilers.

Li Shilin, a senior engineer with the Chongqing Environmental Protection Bureau, said boilers in the catering sector alone consume one million tons of coal a year, producing the largest share of the city's air pollutants.

Years of anti-pollution efforts have reduced the city's coal consumption by a quarter, but Chongqing's air is still far from satisfactory, Li added.
