Hong Kong SAR to Join CBA Next Season

A team from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) will take part in the competitions of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league next season, an official from the country's basketball authority said on Friday.

Xin Lancheng, chief director of the Chinese Basketball Management Center, told a CBA meeting that Hong Kong will become the 13th team of the league, but it will be a difficult job for the Center to plan an expansion for the premature league, which is in its fifth year.

"The Hong Kong team asked to be excluded from the relegation system," Xin said. "We have to discuss the issue with them to find a better way out for fair play competitions in the league."

Xin added the CBA may have to recruit one more team if the Hong Kong SAR joins because otherwise there will be one team in each round who has no game to play.

Hong Kong, which has not produced enough local basketball talents, may have to introduce players from the overseas and China 's inland provinces to stay in the first-division league. Xin said the CBA league welcomed the Hong Kong team, but had to make necessary adjustments to its league system.

The league, however, is not ready to give up the relegation system though about half of the twelve teams want to have the system scrapped, Xin said.
