China to Tackle Water Shortage

Various measures have been adopted to cope with a serious shortage of water resources by the Chinese government. It sees to it that water-saving irrigation agriculture is first developed in China's plain areas and a total of over 25 billion yuan has been utilized to crack this hard nut.

So far, in China there are 300 counties that have been listed as areas in urgent need to save water resources. Meanwhile, increased agricultural and industrial production is demanded. As things stand in China at present, the country's water-saving irrigation areas have been expanded to over 18 million hectares over the Chinese land.

Statistics show China has by a per-capita water resource appropriation amount of only 2400 cubic meters been warned as one of the 13 countries suffering from a serious shortage of water resources.

Due to a lack of water resources, a readjustment has been made of the development areas of agriculture and industries in many a varied areas of China, with a cut in the number of industrial projects consuming large amounts of water in cities against a tight supply of water.

Some experts told that for more waterfall and water supply in the south of China and less in the north the project "Move South Water North" has been under consideration in a bid to meet the demand of agriculture and industry for water supply in the north of China.
