China to Intensify Inspection of Fireworks Production

China will launch a large-scale nationwide inspection of fireworks production and sales in an effort to prevent accidents.

An explosion at a privately owned firecracker workshop killed 33 people and injured 12 others in a village in Pingxiang City in East China's Jiangxi Province on March 11.

This accident drew the attention of Chinese leaders including President Jiang Zemin, and the State Council has issued a circular to strengthen control on the production and sale of fireworks.

The State Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision will cooperate with related departments to launch the upcoming inspection, and all places producing or selling fireworks without being properly licensed will be shut down.

Those with licenses will all be inspected, including their production equipment, technology, and testing systems.

Enterprises failing to meet standards will be forced to stop production and will have their licenses withdrawn. Sub-standard fireworks will be confiscated and destroyed, and their producers will be exposed publicly and receive punishment according to the appropriate laws and regulations.
