Construction of Gas Pipeline in Northwest China

The construction of a major natural gas pipeline linking Qinghai and Gansu provinces in northwestern China started.

The pipeline is an important part of the Chinese government's plan to send the rich natural gas resources in the northwest to the eastern parts of China.

The pipeline runs 953 kilometers from the Sebei Natural Gas Field in the Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, and is expected to cost 2.5 billion yuan.

The pipeline has a designed capacity to send two billion cubic meters of natural gas a year and is expected to be operational by October 2001.
