Shanghai Hosts Symposium On "Comfort Women"

A three-day international symposium on the issue of Chinese "comfort women" during the World War II (1939-1945) period opened in Shanghai on March 30. Those attending indignantly pointed out that the "comfort women " system the Japanese militarists adopted during World War II is a supreme disgrace in the history of mankind. This is the first time that such a seminar has been held in China.

Materials provided by participants show that China is the country that suffered greatest harm from this shameful event, as statistics show that some 200,00 of the acknowledged 400,000 " comfort women" were Chinese.

During the war, the Japanese invaders established "comfort centers" in every place they trampled over in China. The Japanese invasion troops established 83 such "comfort centers" in Shanghai alone.

The symposium attracted 170 scholars from China's mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the Philippines, the United States, New Zealand, and Singapore.

During the symposium, participants will discuss issues including the "comfort women" system, Unit 731, the Nanjing Massacre, and post-war compensation from the Japanese government
