Jiang Zemin to Pay State Visit to Five Nations

Chinese President Jiang Zemin will pay a state visit to Israel, Palestine, Turkey, Greece and South Africa between April 12 and 27, Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi announced at a press conference in Beijing Thursday.

During the visit, Jiang will go to Alexandria, Egypt, to meet President Hosni Mubarak of the Arab Republic of Egypt at the invitation of the latter, Sun said.

Jiang is paying the visit at the invitation of President Ezer Weizman of the State of Israel, President Yasser Arafat of the State of Palestine, President Suleyman Demirel of the Republic of Turkey, President Costis Stephanopoulos of the Republic of Greece, and President Thabo Mbeki of the Republic of South Africa.

Sun said Jiang's visit represents an important diplomatic activity of China at the turn of the century. "It is aimed at increasing high-level exchanges and promoting further development of bilateral relations with the six nations," Sun noted.

President Jiang will also exchange views with leaders of these countries on current regional and international situations so as to enhance mutual understanding and strengthen cooperation on regional and international affairs, the spokesman said.
