Chines Vice-Premier Qian Qichen stressed in Beijing March 29 that the "one China" principle is the basis and prerequisite for the peaceful solution of the Taiwan issue.
He made the remarks in a meeting with the United States President Bill Clinton's Adviser for National Security Affairs Samuel Berger.
"We urge the new leader in Taiwan to return to the "one China" principle as soon as possible," Qian said, adding that the "one China" principle has been an unanimous consensus of the international community including the United States.
He said that the United States should fully recognize the sensitivity and complexity of the current situation, and take practical actions to adhere to the "one China" principle and to observe the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques.
