Xinhua Special Commentator's Article on Fighting CorruptionChina's Xinhua news agency published its special commentator's article March 29 entitled "Be Fully Confident in Pushing Forward the Anti-Corruption Campaign." The article says the Communist Party of China (CPC) has adopted a correct line, guiding principles and policies for combating corruption in China.Corruption has been a major concern for the Party and government in the new historical period of reform and opening up. The Party and government have strictly adhered to Deng Xiaoping's theory on fighting against corruption and building a clean and honest government. The anti-corruption campaign should be carried out in line with the general goals of reform, development and stability. The majority of Party members and officials should be educated to avoid engaging in corrupt practices. Party officials who do engage in corruption will be severely punished. Education should be strengthened and legal and management systems improved through on-going reforms. Since the 15th CPC Congress, held in 1997, the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee has continued its anti-corruption campaign by implementing a series of important measures which include forbidding the army, armed police and law-enforcement departments from engaging in commercial activities, formulating new regulations, handling a number of major criminal cases, and launching special campaigns against rampant crimes such as smuggling. Efforts have paid off. A number of corruption cases have been cracked and offenders have been brought to justice. The article quotes Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, as saying that the Party will be able to overcome corruption with the support of the Chinese people.
