North China Province Ensures Education for Handicapped ChildrenHandicapped children in north China's Hebei Province are ensured adequate rudimentary or vocational education due to intensified efforts from the provincial government.A total of nearly 10,000 handicapped children in the province are attending schools or classes set up specially for them, accounting for 85 percent of the total handicapped children at schooling age in Hebei. Hebei increased support for special education in recent years, allocating one million yuan annually to set up schools or classes for handicapped children. For the past five years, the province has injected more than 30 million yuan into building infrastructure for special education. The province already has 96 special schools for handicapped children, with another 40 county-level special schools under construction. Most of these schools are equipped with special classrooms and computer rooms designed specially for handicapped children. Vocational education is also prioritized in the field in a bid to have the handicapped children prepared for future job opportunities, and many special schools have opened specialties such as cooking, massage, breeding of domestic poultry and vegetable growing.
