CMC Vice-Chairman Meets Bangladesh Guests

The Chinese government will adhere to the principle of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems" in the issue of Taiwan, but it will not make the commitment not to use force, said a senior Chinese military officer in Beijing March 29 afternoon.

Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, made this remark while meeting with visiting rear admiral Abu Taher, chief-of-staff of the Bangladesh navy, and his party. "The Taiwan issue is left over from history and the recent election there was a regional one. No matter who won it, he should stick to the 'one China' principle," said the CMC vice chairman. Taher said that Bangladesh will continue to adhere to the "one China" policy.

China and Bangladesh are friendly neighbors, and have enjoyed traditional friendship of cooperation, Zhang said.

"The two countries have for long enjoyed mutual understanding, support, help and cooperation in international affairs" he added. Zhang also expressed appreciation for Bangladesh's firm support and help in such issues as Taiwan, human rights, and Tibet. An important component of the State relationship and the relationship between the two armies has been a full demonstration of the good neighboring and friendly ties between China and Bangladesh, Zhang said.

The development of State and military relations conforms to the fundamental interests of the people of the two countries, and will benefit regional peace and stability as well, he said.

Zhang also made a brief introduction to China's domestic situation and army building.

Taher expressed his appreciation for the achievements China has scored in economic development and army building, and showed his gratitude for the aid the Chinese government has offered to Bangladesh.

He said that the Bangladesh government values its relations with China, and will commit itself to promoting Bangladesh-China friendship.

Prior to the meeting, Wu Quanxu, deputy chief of staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, also met with Taher, who is Beijing at the invitation of Shi Yunsheng, commander of the PLA Navy.
