Activities Commemorating Ancient Kingdom to be Held

Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region will organize a series of activities to bring back people's memories of Loulan (Kroraina), an ancient kingdom known as "China's Pompeii in the desert."

The ancient kingdom was located on the eastern tip of the Taklimakan Desert in the southern part of Xinjiang. According to historical records, it was a famous city at the juncture of the southern and northern routes of the Silk Road some 2,000 years ago.

Because of diminishing water resources, the city was gradually ruined and abandoned. It was discovered by a Swedish during an exploration in 1900.

A group of scholars specializing in the research of Loulan will set off for archeological investigation at the site, according to organizers of the activities.

An exhibition displaying 140 cultural objects unearthed from Loulan will also be held in the cities of Hami, Dunhuang, Lanzhou and Xi'an. If possible, it will be shown in some foreign cities.

A website introducing Loulan will be opened within the year. A set of stamps with Loulan as the main theme is being made.
