Lu Jun will become the first Chinese male referee for the Olympics soccer tournament, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) said on Wednesday. The CFA spokesman Hong Jianming said that Lu has been selected by the world soccer governing body FIFA to officiate in the Olympics Games.
So far there are not Chinese soccer referee in such high-profile competitions as the Olympics and World Cup finals. Lu, who was crowned Asian Referee of the Year Last May, has gained international accolade after officiating at the 1997 and 1999 world youth championships.
FIFA approved a total of 40 referees for the Olympics with six from Asian countries, added Hong.
